Dubrovac Fortress of Karlovac is located in 4 km from the historical center of the Karlovac city, and in 56 km from Zagreb city.
Dubrovac Fortress is one of the best-preserved and the most beautiful monuments of Croatian medieval architecture.
Strategic Dubrovac Fortress was built in 1193, on the hill above Kupa river, at the height of 185 m above the sea level. That was the first large settlement in the Karlovac region.
Through the history, the fortress had been passed from hands to hands – it was owned by many important wealthy families. The appearance of Dubrovac had changed trough historical periods, to: in 15th century is was influenced by the renaissance style, and in 1837 – by romanticism.
For a long period of time the fortress was used as a hotel, which brought serious damage to its original interiors. In 1952 Dubrovac Fortress was restored to its original form.
As the legend goes, there is a tunnel at the bottom of the fortress well, which leads to the Kupa river bank and to the old center of Karlovac city.
Today the main fortress tower accommodates a museum, which will tell you the history of the Dubrovec. From the top of the main tower opens a wonderful view onto the Karlovac and the surroundings.
In a stylized medieval yard of the fortress there is a restaurant and a cafe.
