Krapina is a picturesque town in Croatian Zagorje, which became world famous thanks to a Zagreb scientist with the world known name, the anthropologist Dradutin Gorjanovic-Kramberger. During excavations on mount Husnjakovo in the environs of Krapina, which lasted over six years, in 1899, Kramberger discovered many fossilised human bones of the so called fossilised human of Krapina.
There were also discovered bones of ancient elephants, rhinos, bears, deer and other animals, which, as scientists believe, ancient men fed on. As a result of the research it was found that the fossilised human was familiar with fire, it made weapons of stone and bone.
Nowadays, the place there the remains of the fossilised human were found are an archaeological complex and a paleonthological reservate protected by the government. Close to the cave where the remains of the fossilised human were found, several sculptures of ancient people and of animals of the same epoch are displayed.
Near the cave there is the building of the Museum of Evolution. Both the museum and Husnjakovo attract tourists and research specialists from many countries of the world.
The new Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the world famous site of the Krapina Neanderthals “Hušnjakovo”.
