Novigrad na Dobri is an old town-fortress is first mentioned in various medias in 1193.
For a long time fortress was property of Frankopan family which was one of the richest and most influential at the time.
It is located just 17 km from Karlovac city and just 64 km from Zagreb capital.
Old town Novigrad na Dobri was property of Frankopan family till 1671. In 1671 after an unsuccessfully organized conspiracy, city was captured and violently plundered by King’s army. From then on fortress was frequently changing owners and its shape.
In the second half of 18 th century Novigrad na Dobri was reconstructed into baroque style castle. In 1783 it was even visited by Emperor Josip II on his way to the sea side.
From 18 th to 20 th century fortress has experienced expanding of the living area, completed construction of clock tower and well. Old entrance to the city, the water channel was backfilled and smaller entrance with gate was opened. From the initial construction only walls and towers were the remaining pieces.
Today fortress has shape of an irregular pentagon with a defense tower. Diameter of the tower is over 12m and wall thickness up to 3,5m.
Old Stone Bridge
Next to the fortress there is a bridge over river Dobra. Initially in the middle ages, bridge was wooden
and approximately in 18 th century it was rebuilt to stone.

Swimming in the river Dobra
In the summer this especially clean part of the river Dobra attracts people to have a refreshing swim. It
is a perfect place in the summer to refresh, relax from the loud crowds in the city and it is located just 1
hour away from Zagreb. Also swimming in the clean fresh water has its own health benefits ;)
