Dolac market of Zagreb was officially opened in 1930, when government of city allocated the square for this market in between the Upper Town / Gornji Grad and Lower Town / Donji Grad, in a centre of Zagreb.
Dolac is really well-recognizable because of its large red umbrellas, hiding the market from rains and sunrays.
These red umbrellas of Dolac have their own name – they are called “Šestinski kišobran”, and, of course, they have their own legend – pretty romantic legend, by the way.

The legend about Šestinski umbrellas of Zagreb
This legend is full of romance, this legend tells: many-many years ago, people of Zagreb were protecting themselves from the rain, using the sadly-looking black umbrellas. One one rainy day, a young man and his lady were standing under one of these sad umbrellas. Suddenly, young man opened his heart, and confessed his love for his lady. Loving couple kissed, and, at the same second, their boring sad umbrella turned brightly-red, with the colourful juicy lines at the edges.
At the present time Šestinski umbrellas / Šestinski kišobrani of Dolac – with no doubts, one of the most popular tourist symbols of the entire Zagreb, which is widely used by enterprising manufacturers in mass production of Zagreb`s souvenir: small red hearts / Licitarsko srce, bells, various magnets and other pleasant little things.
