The island of Vis is a small touristic island of the Split region of Middle Dalmatia Croatia located not far from the isle of Hvar.
Vis is heaven for those who like calm rest alone with the nature, Mediterranean cuisine and home wine, and for those who are fond of sea fishing, diving and for yachtsmen.
The are of the isle of Vis is 90.26 sq. km. The isle of Vis is the most remote from the mainland island of Croatia, only 3,700 people permanently live on the island.
The Vis channel separates the isle of Vis from the isle of Hvar.
Vis island history
The histort of the isle of Vis goes back to the 4th century BC, when the Greek colony of Issa was founded on the island. The first Greek colony was located on the same spot where the city of Vis of the island of Vis is nowadays.
Slavs settled the isle of Vis in the 8th century.
Throughout its long history, Vis belonged to Greeks, Romans, Venetians, after the Patriotic war, in 1815, the isle of Vis was made part of the Austrian empire.
In the 19th century two significant historical events took place near Vis there is the battle of Lissa (March 13, 1811), when the English fleet defeated the strong French-Venetian fleet; and the Battle of Lissa (July 20, 1866) between the Italian fleet and the Austrian Fleet, which won.
During the First World War in 1918-1921 the isle of Vis was captured by Italians, and after the Second World War the isle became part of Yugoslavia.
After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1990, the isle of Vis became part of the independent state of Croatia.
Sightseeing of Vis isle
Among the sights of the isle of Vis are the remains of the Ancient Greek settlement of Issa (4th century).
In the town of Vis of the island there is a Franciscan monastery (16th century) built in the place of a Greek and a Roman theatre, a few remaining churches and palaces (14th-16th centuries).
For those who might be interested, in the town of Komiza of Vis there is a fishing museum.
Of particular interest to the guests is Blue Cave (Modra spilja) of the isle of Vis, which is located on the small island of Bisevo near Komiz, a unique naturally illuminated grotto.
In the central part of the island there is the Tito Cave, where resistance to the German occupants was organised during the Second World War.

The isle of Vis is characterised by its uneven landscape, the central part of Vis includes three mountain ranges with the highest point of the island – Mt Hum 587 meters above sea level.
The southern coast of the isle of Vis consists of many grat bays. The most famous one is Stiniva bay, which has a pebbled beach and is surrounded by cliffs. Ploce, Vela Travna, Mala Travna, Taleska mala, Taleska vela and Srebrena bays are also popular on Vis.
