Mirogoj was opened in 1876 on the area, which belonged to a famous linguist and journalist Ljudevit Gaj.

Project of the main building of the Cemetery Temple, arcades and the Peter and Paul’s Chapel were projected by Herman Bolle.

The construction itself started in 1879, and it stretched for 50 long years. In according with the plan of architect, Mirogoj is now looking like a fortress, opened for every incoming.

Arcades and pavilions of cemetery are the real pieces of architectural art in the open air.

Many tombstones belong to the hand of famous sculptors – Ivan Meštrović, Antoine Avgustinčić, Dusan Damon and Edo Murtic.

In the arcades of the Mirogoj cemetery are placed the family crypts of famous people from Croatia and Austria-Hungary (which included Croatia for a long time); there rest in peace writers and poets, actors and composers, politics and entrepreneurs, the Nobel Prize laureates and even the first president of Croatia – Franjo Tuđman; there are the graves of people of different religions and destinies.

On the Mirogoj is also found the German military cemetery; monuments for Croatians, who died during the First World War; monuments for the national heroes of Yugoslavia; monuments for the victims of Croatian War for Independence.
