Split city

Split city could be called the most festive city of Croatia.

It is in the central part of Croatia’s coastline between the Zadar city and Dubrovnik city, splitting Dalmatia into two parts and is its heart.

Split was founded in the year 305; it recently turned 1710 years old!

Sightseeing in Split

Throughout the last seventeen centuries many civilisations have left their trace there, and, as the saying goes, “different epochs are tied here by the clothes-lines stretched from one house to another.”

The name of the city comes from the Latin word “palatium” — “a palace”, as in 295 it appeared in the place of a luxurious palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, which was back then encircled by massive walls, behind which the citizens of the neighbouring towns pillaged by Avar and Slav tribes in the 8th century.

It wasn’t the palace that was built in Split: it was Split itself that grew around the palace, which the Roman Emperor Diocletian built for himself in the 3rd century.

The marble for the palace was brought from Turkey, the granite columns and the sphinxes from Egypt. The square building was so huge (its area is three hectares) that in time it turned into a fortress protecting the locals from barbarian attacks.

Many years later a city appeared. Gradually, the palace, qualified by UNESCO to be one of the world treasuries of the world cultural heritage, trend into a fortress city, which nowadays is the main landmark of Split.

The Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the Сathedral of Saint Duje of Split is the oldest building among the European cathedrals.

The Split bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius was built in the 13th century.

The height of the bell tower is 57 meters.

The Split guests can climb the steps to the top of the tower, offering amazing view of the Split town and Adriatic sea.

Such masterpieces as the temple of Jupiter, the Сathedral of Saint Duje, Procuration square made in the Venetian style, the Silver and Golden gates can be rightly considered among the most interesting cultural monuments of the Adriatic.

The unique architecture of the city, which is a mix of several styles, made it charming and unique.

A few buildings of the past still exist: these are the Emperor’s mausoleum (it became part of the Cathedral of St Duje), the temple of Jupiter, three watchtowers and the Peristyle — a rectangular hall under the open sky, surrounded by marble columns, which is nowadays favoured by street musicians and amateur choirs.

The Secret of Egyptian Sphinx in Split city

Secret of Egyptian Sphinx in Split city
Attention of all visitors of Peristil square – a heart of Diocletian’s Palace in the Split city – is invariably attracted by a figure of Sphinx, calmly and majestically laying next to the western entrance to The Cathedral St. Duje.

Realy, it is quite hard to don’t notice almost 3-meters-high sculpture, whole made of black granite.
