Ozalj Castle of Karlovac is located in 17 km from the historical center of the Karlovac city, and in 66 km from Zagreb city.
The castle is located at the top of the rock; it rises above the Kupa river – it was initially build to guard its waters and banks.
Through its history, the castle was rebuild multiple times. The remains of the wall dated to the times of Ancient Rome prove, that the first foundation of the castle belongs to the 6th century.
Since 1244, the castle was in possession of few influential families: Babonici, Frankopanks family, Zrinski family, counts Petazzi, Perlas family, counts Batthyany, Thurn family, and Taxis family. Starting from the 1928 and to the present times, the castle belongs to the fellowship known as the “Brethern of the Croatian Dragon”.
An entrance to the yards of Ozalj castle is completely free. Visitors will get a chance to explore the inner yards of the castle, rise onto the walls and enjoy the picturesque views onto the surrounding nature and the Kupa river.
Inside of the castle there is a museum dedicated to the origins of the Ozalj / “Zavičajni muzej Ozalja”. In the museum one can find a very interesting collection of historical and archaeological exhibits from the ancient Ozalj and its surrounding territories. An entrance to the museum costs 10 kn (about 1,3 euro).
