Wines of Croatia are becoming more and more famous all around the world; they take the winning places in the international wine exhibitions and contests.

Favourable geographical position, great climate and the unique ground composition are the reason the growing grapes in Croatia are so perfectly suitable for the wine creation.

Total area of the vineyards in Croatia (2018) was estimated to be 20 000 hectares and around 64 million litres (2017) of wine are being produced annually.

Wine regions in Croatia

  • Bregovina wines region: this region stretches through all the central and the north-western parts of Croatia. It includes the wineyards of Zagorje, Prigorje, Medumurja, Plesivicu and Moslavinu. The wines that are characteristic for this region are: Rajnski Rizling, Sauvignon, Pinot sivi and bijeli, Chardonnay, Silvanac zeleni, Grasevina, Kraljevina and Zuti Muskat, as well as some of the red wines – Pinot and Frankovka.
  • Slavonija i Podunavlje wine region: this is an outstandingly huge wine region of Croatia: it spreads all across the western side of the country, from the Daruvar to the Danube. Most of the Croatian wines originate here. The region is mostly famous for its white wines: Kraljevski Traminac and Grasevina, as well as Pinot Bijeli.
    A little less famous but significant nonetheless are the red wines of the region: Frankovka, Kadarka and Portugisca.
  • Dalmacija wine region: this is the southern region of the landmass Croatia, which also includes such islands as Hvar and Brac, also famous for their wines. Dalmatia is famous by its internationally acclaimed ref wines. The wine known as Plavac mali has already become legendary. It comes from the Dingac and Postup, Peljesac, Posip, Babic and Marastina. Dubrovacka Malvazija also has its numerous fans; it is, however, significantly less popular than the Malvazija Istarska from the Istra region.
  • Istra and Kvarner wine regions: the wine culture of the Istra region traces its roots all the way back to the Ancient Rome. The region includes the entire Istra peninsula, Kvarner and the giant island Krk (which, by the way, has its own wine – Zlahitina.
    Istra is famous for both – red and white wines, dry or sweet. The most famous ones are: Merlot, Muškat bijeli, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot white, gray and red.
    Istrian Malvazija and Teran – are the Istrian wines with the international name.

There are multiple grape species planted in the wine regions of Croatia. We are, however, most interested in the species that are unique for the Croatia alone.

Generally, there are four major wine regions in Croatia. Each of them possesses its own unique characteristics and produced its own unique wines.
