One of the most interesting landmarks of Croatia is the fortress of Trsat not far from the Rijeka city of Croatia.
The fortress of Trsat is the best-preserved Medieval fortress of Croatia and the Adriatic.
The fortress of Trsat towers above Rijeka at the height of 138 meters above sea level, the main tower of the fortress can be seen from any point in the town.
Originally, the fortress of Trsat of Rijeka had a strategically important position as it towered above a deep canyon and Rijecina river, ships travelling into the mainland were observed from there. In different places, the walls of the fortress reach the height of 20-25 meters.
The fortress of Trsat was built in the 13th century and belonged to the Dukes of Krk or Francopana. After it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1750, the fortress of Trsat was completely rebuilt and turned into a luxurious castle with rose windows and Gothic ornaments on the facade, but the two world wars of the 20th century reduced it to ruin again. Later, Trsat was completely restored and opened for tourist visits.
On the main tower of the fortress there is a sightseeing platform and a pole with a Croatian flag. What is particularly impressive is the view of the town of Rijeka, the coast and the canyon from the fortress.
The castle is not of a large size. In the courtyard there is a copper sculpture of a vasilisk — a mythological creature with a cock’s head and a dragon’s body.
The entrance into the fortress of Trsat is guarded by St Mark’s stone lion.
Nowadays, there are exhibitions and concerts organised in the courtyards and the halls of the fortress. There are a summer cafe and a small museum operating.
